27 June 2008
Transoft, an expert in innovative modernisation software and
services solutions, today announced the launch of CIO, its new
product which enables organisations to maximise the potential of
their existing systems by using COBOL applications with relational
databases (RDBMS) , replacing older proprietary COBOL ISAM
file handlers.
Designed to work with a wide variety of COBOL dialects,
including Micro Focus COBOL, ACUCOBOL and RM COBOL, CIO provides a
bridge between the existing COBOL code and the new relational
database such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.
Data is structured and stored natively in the RDBMS, but the
COBOL programs continue to use native COBOL data structures and
data types. CIO provides the gateway between the two very different
worlds. Any changes required to the COBOL code are automatic using
Transoft’s pre-processor technology prior to compilation.
Implementing CIO is easy and fast, and in the case of Micro Focus
COBOL and ACUCOBOL the product can be implemented without changing
any COBOL code or even recompiling programs.
Many business critical systems and commercial software packages are
written in COBOL, and modern COBOLs provide a robust, portable and
fully functional environment for software development. However,
most COBOL programs continue to use the native ISAM file handlers
provided by the COBOL vendor. These file handlers do not provide
the flexibility, accessibility and robustness of a RDBMS. As
businesses require better business intelligence functionality,
enterprise application integration and high availability of mission
critical data, there is an increasing demand to modernis e the
databases underpinning these COBOL applications.
Reserve National Insurance, owned by Unitrin, an $8 billion
company that specialises in property and casualty, life, health,
and accident insurance, and consumer finance products, is an early
adopter of the product architecture and methodology, and Raymund
Gordon, Vice President Information Technology, is delighted with
the results: “We wanted the flexibility and accessibility of a
relational structure without undertaking a major development
project with all the associated costs. We chose Transoft and the
breakthrough technology associated with the CIO product because it
is a complete solution that didn’t require any code changes, needed
minimal programmer training and offered exceptional performance.
These benefits have dramatically reduced the project duration, risk
and cost, surpassing all our expectations.”
Felix Decsi, Lead Architect for Transoft CIO, commented, “We are
very excited about the launch of CIO. Transoft has been providing
database migration and legacy data connectivity solutions for over
20 years. Our unparalleled experience in spanning the gap between
legacy data and modern relational technology has enabled us to
develop a product that is easy to implement, with minimum impact on
the COBOL application, but at the same time through its innovative
architecture, delivers high throughput and excellent
scalability”.
